Obstacles Are Overcome
If you’ve ever been around Word of Life camps, you’ll find it’s a frequent privilege to witness firsthand the profound and life-changing impact that camps can have on young people. One story that stands out is that of Alicia (name changed), a courageous young girl from a mixed-faith family who made a decision that would forever change her life.
Alicia grew up with a Christian mother and a Muslim father, constantly navigating the tensions between two very different belief systems. For years, she wrestled with these conflicting influences, unsure of which path to follow. When she came to Lake Koeris, Germany, she wasn’t expecting the clarity and courage she would soon receive.
On Wednesday night, after hearing the Gospel message during the salvation rally, Alicia felt the Holy Spirit stir in her heart. That evening, she made the bold decision to follow Jesus. But by Thursday, fear crept in—fear of the implications of this choice on her family. She began to second-guess her decision, concerned about how her father and his side of the family might react.
Friday morning, during the last devotion, Alicia was moved to tears by a worship song. In that moment, all of her doubts melted away, and her desire to follow Jesus solidified. She sought out a counselor, and together they prayed as she recommitted her life to Christ. When her mother arrived to pick her up, Alicia didn’t hesitate. She told her mom she had made the decision to give her whole life to Jesus. Her mother wept with joy, fully supportive of her daughter’s choice, and promised to protect her from the pressures she might face at home.
The next day, Alicia and her mother planned to share her testimony during a Christian service at her mother’s church. Although we don’t know if Alicia ultimately shared her testimony, the intention itself was a powerful testament to her courage and newfound faith. This moment was a reminder that no matter the family dynamics, God is at work in the hearts of young people.
Pickleball Made it to Lake Koeris!
In addition to these incredible spiritual breakthroughs, we also saw how God can use the simplest activities—like pickleball—to open doors for the Gospel. This summer, an American team from Plano Bible Chapel introduced our camp to this fast-paced sport, which has quickly gained popularity in the U.S. Though relatively new to Germany, pickleball became a huge hit at Lake Koeris. Campers and staff alike embraced the game, using it as an opportunity to build friendships and foster connections that could lead to deeper conversations.
In an area famous for pickles, it was fitting that pickleball became a camp favorite. What started as a fun activity became a tool for connection, showing that God can use even the most unlikely things to advance His Kingdom. We’re reminded that there are so many tools to aid in evangelism—we can be creative in reaching people for the Gospel!
Word of Life’s camps continue to be a place where God is changing lives, using every moment—big and small—to reach hearts and transform futures.
