Reaching Ukraine with the Gospel Through Theater
“I am the Light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” — John 8:12
This powerful truth was at the heart of Word of Life Ukraine’s theatrical outreach this winter. Through the gospel-centered play In Search of Light, a dedicated team of 35 students and staff traveled across Ukraine, boldly proclaiming the hope of Christ to communities living in spiritual and emotional darkness.
Originally praying to reach 3,000 people, the team was astonished to see that God had much greater plans. Over the course of 23 days and 34 performances in 15 cities, the message of Jesus reached 7,148 people—children, parents, grandparents, and entire families who heard the good news that Jesus is the Light of the world.
One Invitation Changed Everything
Among the thousands who heard the gospel, one story stands out as a beautiful testimony of transformation.
Last year, Victoria, a mother of three, was invited by a neighbor to attend In Search of Light at Transfiguration Church in Kyiv. Although she believed in God in a distant sense, she had no personal relationship with Him and had never thought to step inside a church.
After the play, her children were invited to attend Sunday school. Victoria brought them each week and, while they were in class, she quietly sat in the main hall, listening to sermons. God began to stir her heart. One Sunday, she approached the pastor and said, “I want to pray.”
That day, Victoria confessed her sins and received Christ as her Savior. She now attends church faithfully – not as a visitor, but as a member. She volunteers in ministry, continues bringing her children, and has found her place in the family of God.
This is just one of many stories. As the Word of Life team continues to share the gospel across Ukraine, they trust that more will come to the saving knowledge of Jesus – one invitation at a time.
