Skibidi Rizz – Ever Heard of It?
“Skibidi Rizz.” Two unsuspecting “brain rot” words (as today’s generation calls them) that God used to change a camper’s life. Halfway through the 2024 summer camp season at The Ridge, Word of Life’s middle school camp in New York, a Bible Institute student named Audrey, who was serving as the camp’s Social Media Specialist, created an Instagram reel. The reel, just like the ones she made every week, used a popular social media trend to promote engagement with followers about Word of Life camps and, ultimately, to point people to Jesus. This particular reel poked fun at camp counselors and adults trying to relate to middle schoolers by using their language (aka – brain rot words). It went viral on Instagram and quickly gained over 6 million views!
Flash forward to a couple of weeks later, Audrey was standing on The Island boat dock chatting with someone about the viral Ridge reel. Another woman on the dock overheard and asked Audrey if she had made that reel. When Audrey said yes, the woman shared that her son had seen the reel on his Instagram feed, looked into Word of Life, and signed up for camp on The Island (the camp for his age group). During his time there that week, he heard the gospel clearly and accepted Jesus as his personal Savior. The mom was now standing in line at The Island boat dock, getting ready to cross the lake to watch her son be baptized.
God can use anything for His Kingdom, and for today’s generation, social media is a powerful and effective avenue to share the gospel! He has a plan, and He will use whatever it takes to reach young people across the globe—even fun, trendy ways.
