Two New Missionary Couples Pioneer A Word of Life Ministry in Vanuatu

Word of Life Vanuatu

Two missionary couples have arrived in Vanuatu, a Pacific island nation east of Australia, to pioneer a new Word of Life ministry. Asher and Kaylee Thompson, have been there since December 9, 2023, and Casper and Sara arrived April 14, 2024.

Language Learning and Cultural Exposure

These couples have been warmly welcomed into many of the island’s cultural experiences, including learning how to make laplap, the traditional food of Vanuatu. Their progress in learning Bislama has been excellent, allowing them to have full meetings with local youth leaders in Bislama already! While they have much more to learn to be fluent, they are grateful to be communicating in the local heart language.

Connecting with Key Leaders

One of the first major initiatives undertaken by the couples was hosting the inaugural “Word of Life Share Day.” This event was a milestone for the ministry in Vanuatu. Key leaders from various evangelical denominations and organizations gathered to learn about the heart and vision of Word of Life for young people. The discussions focused on the future of youth ministry in Vanuatu and how Word of Life is equipped to support these efforts. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many leaders expressing a strong desire for assistance in youth ministry. The event opened numerous doors for collaboration and set a bold vision for the future.

Attending a National Youth Conference

As a direct outcome of the “Word of Life Share Day,” the missionary couples have been invited to several significant events. One such event is an upcoming national youth conference where Casper, Sara, Asher, and Kaylee will teach multiple sessions. This opportunity will allow them to share their passion for youth ministry and equip local leaders with the tools and knowledge to effectively engage with young people.

One of the highlights from the National Youth Conference was the translation of the “Colors of Life” gospel tool into Bislama. There are few gospel tools available in Bislama, so they were thrilled to have this resource translated. They taught it to the attendees in their session and had them practice sharing the gospel with each other. They were able to print out copies for everyone to take home. Interestingly, all the colors used in the “Colors of Life” are also found in the Vanuatu flag, enabling them to use their national flag as a gospel tool.

Engaging with Youth Groups in Port Vila

The couples have also begun to engage with various youth groups around Port Vila. Their presence and participation are not only encouraging for the youth but also serve as a bridge between the local churches and the broader vision of Word of Life. By connecting with leaders and young people, they are fostering a community built on faith, support, and mutual growth.

Gratitude and Future Outlook

The missionary couples are deeply grateful for the support and prayers from their community. Their arrival in Vanuatu and the successful hosting of the “Word of Life Share Day” have laid a strong foundation for the ministry. With God’s providence, they are optimistic about the future and look forward to the continued growth and impact of their work.

As the sky seems to be the limit, the couples remain dedicated to their mission, trusting in God’s plan for the youth of Vanuatu. Their story is a testament to the power of faith, community, and unwavering dedication to serving others.
